Commerce West Auto Insurance

The Commerce West Insurance Company, a member of the Commerce Group and formerly known as Western Pioneer Insurance Company, has made news in recent years due to its implementation of a new policy regarding the auto insurance policy renewal process that it undertakes. The new process that is being used for Commerce West auto insurance has changed the company’s profit margin considerably by significantly reducing the number of Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) that it orders each year. This was accomplished by implementing a new business rules system that its developers have dubbed CleverPath.

The success of CleverPath shows in the results that Commerce West auto insurance obtained almost immediately. Cutting the number of MVRs obtained annually helped Commerce West grow from $38 million direct written premium to $46 million in one year and earn an AM Best A+ rating. CleverPath, which was developed by a company called Computer Associates (CA), has since been used by a number of other businesses beside Commerce West, to aid various IT aspects of their businesses. Companies and organizations that have benefited from CleverPath include McLaren Racing, Suncorp, ARCO, Xystar Technologies, The United States Navy, and the City of El Paso, Texas. Commerce West further used CleverPath to make alterations to the business rules used in other aspects of their policy renewal process. The implementation of CleverPath saved Commerce West money not only by reducing the number of MVRs obtained but by reducing the needs for additional workforce in it’s underwriting and renewal departments.

In 1995 The Commerce Group acquired Western Pioneer, thus creating Commerce West. Located in Pleasanton, California, Commerce West offers both commercial and personal auto insurance throughout California and also offers policies through independent agents.
