Notes on Temporary Auto Insurance

Auto insurance is rarely a temporary thing. When a person buys insurance for their vehicle, they usually intend to maintain that coverage for as long as they own the car and will usually transfer the insurance coverage when they purchase a new vehicle. There are times, however, when you may wish to purchase temporary auto insurance.

When you rent a car or a moving truck, you may purchase temporary auto insurance from the rental company. If you are driving your vehicle across the country you may want temporary car insurance that will add additional coverage for the duration of the trip.

Temporary insurance for automobiles is defined as an insurance policy that will remain in force for a limited, usually specified, amount of time. This is also called term auto insurance, although in some cases the term may not be specifically defined. When renting a car, for example, the insurance coverage you purchase will be in force for as long as you have the rental in your possession.

Most insurance companies offer some form of temporary insurance, whatever the reason that you need it may be. Some insurance companies will sell non-owner or non-owned insurance on a temporary basis as well.

These forms of temporary insurance are not something that you’ll be likely to need often, but it is good to know that the option is there should the need arise. Most likely the only time you’ll need a temporary form of automobile insurance is when renting a car or other vehicle at which time you’ll purchase insurance just for the duration of time that you’ll be driving the car.
