Getting a Trailer Covered Auto Insurance Policy

It is widely known that auto insurance is required by law in every state. When you buy a car or a truck you must have it insured before you can register it with the state department of motor vehicles. But what about a trailer designed to be towed by your car or truck? What are the insurance requirements for a non motorized vehicle? In many states they must be registered and are typically used to haul valuable items. What do you need to do to be sure you have a trailer covered auto insurance policy?

A trailer covered auto insurance policy will simply be a standard insurance policy that also covers a specific trailer that is towed by the vehicle on a regular basis. Some policies, however, will also include the stipulation that any trailer that is attached to the vehicle at any time is also covered. Unless you plan on using a trailer on a regular basis, you’ve probably never opted for this coverage.

It is usually business auto insurance customers that are most concerned with obtaining auto insurance that also covers a trailer, since businesses are more likely to require the use of a trailer on a regular basis. Whatever your reason for using a trailer, however, it is a good idea to make sure it is covered by your car insurance so that you will be compensated for the loss or damage to the items on the trailer and, of course, the trailer itself.
